| Winter Cache Game |
 What is the Winter Cache Game?
The Winter Cache Game is a fun competition to get you out of the house during the chilly days of winter. Designed for all Saskatchewan cachers, the objective is to complete any 10 of the 20 game requirements for finding or placing caches during the next 2 months. Prizes will be awarded to the 2 top scores, the low score, and the score closest to the average.
Rules:
The short version: 10 requirements in 2 months; report each requirement within 7 days of fulfilling in the Claims thread at www.saskcachers.com forums; go for high, low or medium points. |

| SITE HACKED |
 Aprox. 2 nights ago, our website was attacked along with a ton of others.
There was a hack that was run on the page through the polling system. It was a fairly similar attack we had 2 years ago with another add-on to this site. Basically someone reversed engineered the code in the polling software, and found a backdoor to rewrite our theme package. All the information on this site is secure and nothing was lost. I have been screening all of the new members, and i am in the process of reviewing the incoming logs. Once I locate the data I am looking for, I will be forwarding this info to our provider and they will pass it on to the authorities. There was over 100,000 websites hit with this same attack and are in the process of doing the same. There is no 100% secure form of CMS that is out there, but i'm looking at possibly making a change in the future. As of today, the polling system has been removed.
There are no virus issues on this site as we speak. The only way you will receive a virus from this site, is by clicking on a link that someone has posted. Be careful with posted links..... if you do not know the member posting or the link looks strange.... drop me a line and i will check it out. |

| Driver Distraction |
 The Saskatchewan government announced that is will be pushing through legislation to ban the use of cell phones (and more so texting) when driving as of January 1, 2010. It makes sense and many accidents have been attributed to drivers distracted in this manner. What's not clear is whether the legislation will include other hand held devices such as GPSr's. I will keep you posted as more information becomes availabe |

Letterboxing (and caching) Safely During Hunting Season (By Baker63)
I looked at the calendar and realized that it was the opening of the northern zone of big game hunting season here in New York State this Saturday. My son wanted to go hiking tomorrow, but I told him no not on opening day.
Now if you still want to go letterboxing or geocaching, here are some recommendations. Please remember that hunters have equal access to public lands as you do:
1- Know what the hunting season is. You really should think twice about going out on opening day, or on big holidays.
2- Many hunters will hunt in the early morning and the later afternoon. Not all, but many. So going out at noontime would be a better time to go.
3- Wear hunters orange. Wear a coat or vest and a hat.
4- Geocache or letterbox at preserves that do not allow hunters. Many areas have these as nature or wildlife refuges.
5- Most importantly, go online and check out the recommendations on your state’s or country’s hunting safety recommendations. They vary from state to state and country to country.
Do Not wear tan, brown, white or light colors.
I was hunting deer with a bow a few years ago and hiked into my stand before daybreak and was all set up. I was wearing camouflaged everything (Bow is different than rifle hunting). Now at dawn, I saw a hunter walking down the path, about 75 feet away. I waved my camouflaged gloved hand, but he couldn’t see me. I took my glove off and waved, he froze and started to get his bow in a ready position. I know this man and he is a safe hunter and he did not draw or even bring the bow around, but he saw something white, my hand and stopped and was looking. I reached in my coat and took out a small flashlight and blinked so he knew what I was. This is important. What he mistook my hand for was the tail of a deer, or flag when deer raise their tail. That is why it is important to NOT WEAR white or any light colors. Dark colors other than tan or brown and wear hunters orange, hunters orange hunters orange is what you should wear!
I really don’t want to give hunters a bad name, as I am one. It is all about safety and with all the different outdoor activates that go on, we just need to be safe. Please use common sense. |
